case study/full-stack product

TradeBind

A full-stack hiring platform for union workers. Built with React, Node.js, MySQL, NGINX, React Native, and Expo, it features role-based experiences for contractors, union admins, and workers. The research and senior capstone project wrapped when I graduated in 2026, and the platform remains live.

Role
Technical lead · full-stack developer
Timeline
September 2024 – May 2026
Status
Capstone complete · platform live

The problem

Construction hiring halls often coordinate worker availability, certifications, and placements through slow manual workflows. Contractors need qualified people quickly, workers need clearer access to opportunities, and union administrators need one reliable view of workforce data.

TradeBind turned that research problem into connected web and mobile experiences for contractors, union administrators, and workers.

What I contributed

  • Established the early platform structure and technical direction during the research phase.
  • Built and integrated role-based workflows across the React web application and shared REST API.
  • Designed MySQL data relationships for users, jobs, applications, certifications, and workforce records.
  • Implemented security controls including role checks, validation, rate limits, HTTPS, and logging.
  • Supported the Expo and React Native mobile application through shared backend contracts.
  • Prepared deployment context, testing materials, and documentation for the client handoff.

Architecture

Web

React and TypeScript interfaces with role-specific dashboards and workflows.

Mobile

Expo and React Native experiences for workers and contractors on iOS and Android.

API

Node.js and Express REST services centralizing validation, permissions, and business rules.

Data & delivery

MySQL behind NGINX, with deployment controls, logging, testing, and documentation.

Outcome and lessons

The team delivered the web platform, mobile application, shared API, database, infrastructure context, and handoff documentation at the end of the senior capstone. The platform remains live after the academic project concluded.

The project reinforced that secure architecture, role-specific usability testing, regular client feedback, and maintainable documentation are product work—not tasks to postpone until after the code is written.
